Brunello Defeats Godart in Queen's Gambit Exchange
Brunello and Godiet
The Opening
GM Sabino Brunello (2516) faced off against IM Francois Godart (2369) in round two of the European Individual Chess Championship 2026. The Italian grandmaster chose the Queen's Gambit Declined with 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6, leading to the Exchange Variation after the opening moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6.
Brunello, who earned his GM title in 2010 and has represented Italy in six Chess Olympiads, held a significant rating advantage against the Belgian international master. The 147-point gap would prove decisive as the game unfolded.
Black's Strategic Missteps
The critical moment came early when Black played 10...Ng4?!, an inaccuracy that allowed White to seize control. The engine preferred 10...Ne4, which would have kept the position roughly equal. Instead, Godart's knight landed on an awkward square, giving Brunello the initiative he needed.
White responded with 11.Bc3, maintaining pressure on the central squares. Black continued with 13...g5?!, another questionable decision that further weakened his kingside structure. This pawn advance looked aggressive but actually created long-term weaknesses that Brunello would exploit methodically.
The Winning Advantage
After 16...Ng4?!, Black's position became genuinely difficult. The knight had no good squares, and White's pieces coordinated beautifully. Brunello played 17.h3, forcing the knight to retreat and consolidating his space advantage.
The position after 20.exf4 showed White's dominance clearly - better piece coordination, safer king, and long-term structural advantages. Black's 20...Nd7 was passive, but alternatives were equally unappealing.
Converting the Win
Brunello demonstrated solid technique in the endgame, methodically improving his position while Black struggled to find counterplay. The Italian GM's experience showed as he converted his advantage without giving his opponent any chances for complications.
The final position after 31.Bg4 left Black in a hopeless situation, and Godart likely resigned shortly after. This was exactly the kind of controlled performance you'd expect from a seasoned grandmaster against a lower-rated opponent in a major tournament.
