Fischer's Nimzowitsch Opening Crushes Mecking at Palma
Bobby Fischer opened with 1.b3 against Brazilian prodigy Henrique Mecking at the 1970 Palma de Mallorca Interzonal, and what followed was a methodical demolition that showcased Fischer's positional understanding at its peak.
The Unusual Opening Choice
Fischer's choice of the Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack with 1.b3 was typical of his psychological approach β avoid main theoretical lines and force opponents to think from move one. Mecking responded naturally with 1...d5 2.Bb2 c5 3.Nf3 Nc6, but Fischer's quiet system proved deceptively dangerous.
The early exchanges 4.e3 Nf6 5.Bb5 Bd7 6.O-O e6 7.d3 Be7 8.Bxc6 Bxc6 gave Fischer the bishop pair and a slight space advantage. While the position looked balanced, Fischer had already planted the seeds for his attack.
The Critical Breakthrough
The game's turning point came in the middlegame when Fischer launched a kingside assault. After 12.Qg4, targeting g7 and preparing f4-f5, Mecking was forced into defensive mode. The Brazilian's 12...Nxe5 exchange only helped Fischer's cause, opening lines for his attack.
Fischer's 16.Rg3! was the key move, doubling on the g-file and creating immediate threats against the black king. When Mecking played 16...Bxe5, Fischer's 17.fxe5 opened the f-file and gave White a crushing position.
The Decisive Attack
The combination 18.exf6 Rxf6 19.Qxg7+! Qxg7 20.Rxf6 won the exchange and left Black's king completely exposed. Fischer had sacrificed his queen for a rook and two pawns, but more importantly, he had destroyed Black's kingside structure.
The endgame was a technical showcase. Fischer's 22.g4 and 25.g5 created a passed pawn storm that Mecking couldn't contain. The final breakthrough came with 35.gxh7 and 36.Ng6+, forcing the Brazilian's resignation after 42.Rd6.
The Tournament Context
This victory was part of Fischer's dominant performance at Palma, where he scored 14.5/19 to qualify for the Candidates matches. For Mecking, then still a teenager, this was a harsh lesson from the future world champion β though he would later achieve a peak rating of 2635 and become Brazil's greatest player.
Fischer's technique in converting winning positions was already legendary by 1970, and this game against Mecking shows why. At ChessFlow, games like this one β where opening psychology meets tactical brilliance β make stunning wall art that captures chess at its most artistic.
