    Lagno Time No See

A Missed Opportunity in the French

Kateryna Lagno and Jiner Zhu battled to a draw in round 2 of the 2026 FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament, but this game was anything but quiet. Playing the French Defense: Tarrasch Variation, Zhu obtained a promising position with the black pieces after Lagno misplayed her preparation in the opening.

The Ukrainian GM (rated 2508) faced off against China's Zhu (rated 2578) in what became one of the most dramatic near-misses of the tournament's early rounds. According to FIDE's official report, Zhu "accumulated a significant edge and looked on course to claim the full point" as she gradually improved her position throughout the middlegame.

    The Critical Blunder

Despite building up what appeared to be a winning position — sources indicate Zhu was up two pawns at one point — the Chinese GM faltered in a highly complex tactical sequence. In a moment that would define the game, she "blundered into a rook sacrifice that forced an immediate draw by perpetual check."

This type of tactical oversight is particularly painful in a Candidates tournament, where every half-point matters in the race to challenge for the world championship. The draw kept both players in the hunt, but Zhu had to be disappointed to let such a promising position slip away.

    Opening Theory Gone Wrong

The C07 French Defense saw Lagno struggle with her preparation early on. The Tarrasch Variation typically gives White good central control, but Zhu's accurate responses put immediate pressure on Lagno's setup. This opening choice by Black proved prophetic — the French Defense is known for creating complex tactical positions where one mistake can be decisive.

The game highlighted both the depth of modern opening preparation and how quickly fortunes can change when players deviate from known theory. Lagno's early difficulties suggested she may have been surprised by Zhu's choice or misremembered her preparation in this line.

    Tournament Context

This draw was part of a round where all eight games in the Women's Candidates ended in draws, keeping the standings tightly packed. As FIDE noted, "All eight contenders are tied for the lead on 1/2" after this round, making Zhu's missed opportunity even more significant in the overall tournament picture.

For Lagno, escaping with a draw after being outplayed for most of the game was a relief that would prove valuable as the tournament progressed. For Zhu, it was a harsh reminder that in elite chess, you have to convert your advantages when they appear.

At ChessFlow, games like this — full of tactical complexity and dramatic swings — make for compelling wall art that captures the intensity of high-level competition.
