Manafov's Gambit
Sargsyan Outplays Manafov in London System Battle
GM Shant Sargsyan (2647) defeated IM Vugar Manafov (2432) in a London System game at the European Individual Chess Championship 2026. The Armenian grandmaster, who won the World U16 Championship in 2018, converted his rating advantage into a full point against the Azerbaijani international master.
The Opening
Manafov opened with the London System, playing 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bf4 g6 3.e3, establishing the characteristic bishop-on-f4 setup. The London has become increasingly popular at all levels for its solid structure and straightforward development. Sargsyan responded with the flexible 2...g6, preparing a King's Indian-style fianchetto that often leads to rich middlegame positions.
The Development
The early moves followed typical London System patterns, with White developing methodically while Black prepared counterplay on the kingside. Sargsyan's choice of the King's Indian setup against the London is a principled approach â Black aims to create dynamic chances while White seeks to maintain central control and space advantage.
The position after the first few moves showed both players following established theoretical paths, with neither side deviating from well-known plans in this opening system.
The Result
Despite the solid opening choice, Manafov was unable to maintain equality against the higher-rated opponent. Sargsyan's superior technique and tactical awareness eventually told, as he converted his advantages to secure the victory.
This result highlights the practical difficulties of playing the London System against strong grandmasters â while the opening provides a safe setup, it often leads to positions where the better player gradually accumulates small advantages.
The game demonstrates why Sargsyan has maintained his position among the world's top 70 players. His ability to outplay opponents in seemingly balanced positions reflects the technical skills that helped him reach a peak rating of 2669 in 2025.
